Here’s a robust red wine that hit all the right notes! What a pleasant find this bottle of Agios Elias turned out to be.
A deep red wine emerged from the bottle as I poured the first glass for a friend who had come over to Villa Carpe Diem to join us for supper.
Unprompted, so a true blind tasting, said friend took a sip and exclaimed ‘this is delicious’. Niki, my wife, also had a glass and she was immediately impressed with the taste.
As well as having a complex, layered, flavour; this one packs a punch. There can be little doubt that the addition of Shiraz into the mix is responsible for some of the flavour. Others have compared this Chrysorroyiatissa monastery wine to a solid French wine of the sort that we have had the pleasure of drinking in the Languedoc Roussillon.
This would be a good wine to carry home whilst holidaying here on Cyprus. In the heat of the summer it would stand chilling, with the addition of an ice cube or two. We drank it at room temperature on an April evening as an accompaniment to a rich red pepper and paprika chicken one-pot dish.
A memorable find and a wine worth adding to your tasting list. It might even find its way onto our ‘welcome pack’ wine list*.
*We provide a bottle of good quality Cypriot wine per adult couple in our guest welcome pack here at Villa Carpe Diem.
