Introduction

Villa Carpe Diem (VCD) is a self-catering villa located on the beautiful south coast of Cyprus, halfway between Larnaca and Limassol. It has been designed to facilitate a person with accessibility or mobility issues to holiday with family or friends.
VCD is approximately 3 km from the sea, and is approached by quiet country roads and up a steep hill, leading into two level paved driveways at either lower ground level or ground level.

The villa is laid out on three floors. The lower ground floor is the self-contained adapted apartment, with access to the garage, garden and main house via a gently sloping, wide, ramped path. The ground floor forms the kitchen, dining room and sitting room of the main house (with cloak/shower room), the upper floor contains 3 bedrooms available to guests (with a choice of either twin or double bedded room, one additional double room and a king-size bedded room with en-suite) plus a family bath/ shower room.
VCD sleeps up to 8 people + cot.

Pre-arrival

  • Prior to arrival all guests and/or carers can contact us via this website or email in order to confirm the general suitability of VCD for your holiday. If you have specific needs please talk to us and we will endeavour to make sure they can be met.
  • We supply full details of how to reach us, please see the google map supplied on this website.
  • If you are arriving at either Larnaca or Paphos airport we can arrange for you to be met with a wheelchair adapted vehicle.  Taxis can be hired from the airport but they are expensive.  There is a bus service from Larnaca town and from Paphos town which drops you at 3km or 6km from the villa, respectively.  We can collect you from these bus stops.
  • We provide a welcome pack of basics (tea, coffee, milk, bread, butter, eggs etc), local food and wine which is in the villa on arrival.

Key Collection, welcome and car parking

  • If you are making your own way to the villa, we supply directions to find us, and you will be met at the house either by us or our agents, who will let you in, supply you with keys and familiarise you with the house.
  • If you have asked us to meet you at the airport we will bring you to the villa and give you the keys and familiarisation tour.
  • Parking is available at the villa for 3 cars, one of which can be accommodated in the garage with level access to the adapted apartment.
  • The parking area is paved and there is a paved ramp 150cm/59 ins wide leading up to the house which has a railing to the left hand side. There is a column which narrows the entrance to the front door to 84cm/33ins wide
  • This area is well lit by overhead light in the porch and wall and other lights covering the parking area.

Main House

ENTRANCE
  • There is a paved path that runs from the parking area to the front door, and also from the parking area to the terrace and pool.
  • The entrance is well lit by overhead light in the porch.
  • The front door is 86cm/34ins wide.
  • The floor covering in the hall and throughout the villa is stone tiles.
HALLS, STAIRS, LANDINGS, PASSAGEWAYS (MAIN HOUSE)
  • The hall, stairs and landings are all well lit using ceiling lights.
  • The entrance hall is 130cm/51ins wide and opens into the sitting area.
  • The floor covering is stone tile.
  • Doorway to staircase is 91cm/36ins wide
  • The staircase to the first floor has 18 steps with 2 spiral curves and 1 landing. It has a rail on the left side (going up) and is 97cm/38ins wide.  The steps are non-slip stone.
SITTING ROOM (MAIN HOUSE)
  • The sitting room/lounge, dining area and kitchen are in one open plan L shaped space with room for wheelchair user to access all rooms easily.  It is situated on the ground floor with level access from the hallway.  There is no door from entrance to sitting room.  The floor is level throughout.
  • The room has a mixture of seating consisting of 2 leather sofas and 2 upholstered sofas and another soft chair with feather cushions. Additionally in 2016 we have provided a raise / recline chair. If you have a feather or other allergy can you let us know on booking form. The sofas’s seat height is 38cm/15ins.
  • Furniture can be moved to accommodate a wheelchair user.
  • There is a wide screened plasma digital smart TV and a DVD Player with remote controls.  There is also an Ipod dock supplied.
  • Lighting is natural daylight through 5 windows, and at night 2 central hanging lights and 3 side table lamps.
  • The flooring is stone tile with rugs that can be taken up if necessary.
  • The verandah area can be accessed from this room via a double glazed door which is 84cm/33ins wide. The windows have venetian blinds which can be drawn during the day
DINING ROOM (MAIN HOUSE)
  • The dining room is at the other end of the sitting room space.  There are no doors in between.
  • The dining table has legs in each corner and a cross bar between the legs at each end, with a central bar running its length. From the floor to lowest point of table is 64cm/25ins high. With the extension leaf in place the distance from the end of the table to the cross bar is 48cm/19ins.
  • There is free space around the table.
  • Chairs (all moveable) – 8 chairs with upholstered seats that have no arms.
  • Lighting is natural daylight through 2 full height sliding doors, and at night a ceiling lamp over the table.
  • Flooring is stone tile.
KITCHEN (MAIN HOUSE)
  • The kitchen is in the L-shape, separated from the dining space by a dividing cupboard unit with a 189cm/74ins gap into the kitchen.
  • The hob is 90cm/35ins from the ground.  The oven is under the hob and has a drop down door.
  • Worktop and sink are 90cm/35ins above the floor and the microwave is on the worktop.
  • The sink has a single lever mixer tap.
  • Fridge/freezer: the highest shelf in the fridge is 160cm/63ins and lowest drawer in the freezer is 28cm/11ins.
  • The kitchen is well equipped with a microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, cordless 360 degree revolving kettle, coffee maker and toaster.
  • The wall cupboards are 146cm/57.5ins above the floor.
  • Glasses and crockery can be moved from wall cupboards to lower cupboards if required, please request this when booking.
  • There is a round pedestal table (diameter 94cm/37ins, height 74cm/29ins) and four more chairs in the kitchen, these can be removed if requested.
  • Lighting is a central ceiling lamp above the table, plus a hob light and two strip lights above the work surfaces.  There is also a window above the sink.
  • There is a double glazed door 84cm/33ins wide leading out to the verandah.
  • The floor is stone tile.
BEDROOMS AND SLEEPING AREAS (MAIN HOUSE)
  • These bedrooms are on the upper floor accessed by the stone staircase next to the entrance hall.  The flooring is stone tiles throughout.
  • Bedroom 1 has a king-size bed and an en-suite shower room with dressing area containing wardrobes and drawers.  The top of the mattress is 31cm/12ins from the ground. There is also a chest of drawers/dressing table and two bedside tables.  The lighting is a ceiling light with bedside lamps on both sides of the bed.  There is also a ceiling light in the dressing area. The door width is 80cm/31.5ins
  • Bedroom 2 (seaview room) has a double bed.  The top of the mattress is 53cm/21ins from the ground.  There is a ceiling light with a bedside light on each bedside table both sides of the bed.  There is a built in wardrobe.  The rails are not adjustable. The door width is 80cm/31.5ins
  • Bedroom 3 (Pool view room) has a double bed.  The top of the mattress is 53cm/21ins from the ground.  There is a ceiling light with a bedside light on each bedside table both sides of the bed.  There is a built in wardrobe.  The rails are not adjustable. The door width is 80cm/31.5ins
  • Bedroom 4 (twin bedded room) has two single beds. The top of the mattress is 53cm/21ins from the ground.  There is a ceiling light with a bedside light on each bedside table both sides of the bed.  There is a built in wardrobe.  The rails are not adjustable. The door width is 80cm/31.5ins
  • Please note that if you are occupying the accessible apartment you also have a choice of three of the four bedrooms above as your additional accommodation.
  • Non-allergenic bedding can be supplied on demand.  Please let us know.
  • In all bedrooms the decor is as follows: light brown stone tile floors and skirting boards, magnolia walls, mid-brown wood doors and door frames, light grey window frames.
BATHROOMS, SHOWER ROOMS AND TOILETS
  • There are three shower/bathrooms in the main house.
  • Bathroom 1 is the en-suite to Bedroom 1.  It has a step in shower with a raised lip 18cm/7ins from the ground, toilet and wash basin.  The toilet seat is 44cm/17ins from the ground.  The wash basin is 82cm/33ins from the ground with a pedestal. The shower and wash basin have single lever taps and the shower head can be hand-held or fixed. The door width is 80cm/31.5ins
  • Bathroom 2 is the main bathroom on the upper floor.  It has a bath with an over-bath shower, toilet and wash basin. The toilet seat is 44cm/17ins from the ground. The top of the bath is 55cm/22ins from the floor. The wash basin is 82cm/33ins from the ground with a pedestal. The bath/shower and wash basin have single lever taps and the shower head can be hand-held or fixed. The door width is 80cm/31.5ins
  • Bathroom 3 is on the ground floor.  It has a double size shower with a raised lip 18cm/7ins from the ground, toilet and wash basin. The toilet seat is 44cm/17ins from the ground.  The wash basin is 82cm/33ins from the ground with a pedestal. The shower and wash basin have single lever taps and the shower head can be hand-held or fixed.  The door width is 72cm/28ins.

Accessible Apartment

ENTRANCE, STAIRS, LANDINGS, PASSAGEWAYS
  • The accessible apartment can be reached in two ways: either by stairs from the main house or from the garage.  It is all at ground level.
  • The stairs are of non-slip stone, there are 14 steps with two landings.  There is a door both at the top and the bottom of the stairs; the upper doorway is 70cm/28ins wide and the bottom doorway is 80cm/32ins. There is no hand rail.
  • The entrance from the garage is through a doorway 93cm/36ins wide.  The floor is level and is paved with stone tiles throughout. The garage is lit with strip lighting and the entrance is lit by a ceiling light.
  • The passageway is 87cm/34ins wide and runs the length of the apartment.  All rooms are accessed from this passageway.  The floors are stone tiles throughout. It is lit by ceiling lights.
  • The decor is as follows: light brown stone tile floors and skirting boards, magnolia walls, mid-brown wood doors and door frames, light grey window frames.
SITTING ROOM/LOUNGE/ SECOND BEDROOM (ACCESSIBLE APARTMENT)
  • This room is on the right of the passageway as you enter from the garage.  The doorway is 90cm/36ins wide.
  • There is a Baltic electric turning bed in this room, 106cm/42 ins wide.  The length is 186cm/73ins.
  • There may be a sofa-bed, a side table and a TV and DVD player on a freestanding table. The furniture can be arranged to suit.  Please let us know if you require the sofa bed to be made up as a bed for a family member, a personal assistant or a carer.
  • There are large spaces between the furniture and the floor is level throughout.  The floor is stone tile.
  • There are sliding patio doors leading onto a terrace.  The opening of the patio doors is 90cm/36ins wide.
  • The sitting room is lit by a ceiling lamp and side table lamps.
  • The decor is as follows: light brown stone tile floors and skirting boards, magnolia walls, mid-brown wood doors and door frames, light grey window frames.
BEDROOM (ACCESSIBLE APARTMENT)
  • The accessible bedroom is situated off the passageway and is equipped with two electric Theraposture profiling beds.  These can be arranged as two single beds (one with cot sides if needed) or one king size bed. The lowest height they can be set is 57cm/22ins and the highest is 100cm/39ins.
  • Width of patient bed is 94cm/37ins and length is 208cm/82 ins, maximum load 175 kilos/385 lbs. The mattress is Theraposture visco elastic memory foam.
  • Width of partner/carer bed is 80cm/32ins. Maximum load 175kilos/385lbs. The mattress is castellated memory foam.
  • We can provide an Easy Trak system and a Voyager powered hoist, or we can provide a manual hoist. (Manual Hoist – weight limit is 200kilos/440lbs) Please bring your own hoist sling.
  • There is level access from the hallway.
  • The doorway to the accessible bedroom is 90cm/36ins wide.
  • There is natural light from the window and at night there is a central ceiling light and two bedside lights on bedside cabinets by each bed.
  • There is a fitted wardrobe with drawers at floor level.  There is also a freestanding wardrobe with shelves at floor level.  The rails cannot be adjusted.
  • The decor is as follows: light brown stone tile floors and skirting boards, magnolia walls, mid-brown wood doors and door frames, light grey window frames.
BATHROOM, WET ROOM AND TOILET (ACCESSIBLE APARTMENT)
  • The wet room contains a bath with overhead/handheld shower, a toilet, wash basin and wet room area with overhead/handheld shower head and gently sloping floor to the drain. The floor is stone tile throughout.
  • The floor is level from the bedroom to the wet room.  It is stone tiled.
  • A wheel in shower/toilet chair is provided.
  • The top of the bath is 55cm/22ins from the ground. There is a support bracket provided.
  • The seat of the toilet is 44cm/17 ins from the ground.  Drop-down handrails are provided.
  • The wash basin is 82cm/33ins from the ground.  It has a pedestal.
  • The taps for the bath, shower and wash basin are all single lever mixer taps.
  • The door width is 90cm/35 ins.
KITCHEN (ACCESSIBLE APARTMENT)
  • The kitchen is directly off the passageway with an opening from the passageway of 110cm/43.5ins.
  • The hob is 90cm/35ins from the ground.  The oven is under the hob and has a drop down door.
  • Worktop and sink are 90cm/35ins above the floor and the microwave is on the worktop.
  • The sink has a single lever mixer tap.
  • Fridge/freezer: the highest shelf in the freezer is 140cm/55ins, and lowest (salad) drawer in the fridge is 40cm/16ins.
  • The kitchen is well equipped with a microwave, washing machine, cordless 360 degree revolving kettle, and toaster.
  • The wall cupboards are 140cm/55ins above the floor.
  • Glasses and crockery can be moved from wall cupboards to lower cupboards if required, please request this when booking.
  • General lighting is provided by ceiling mounted light bar with 3 adjustable LED white lights, plus a hob light and an additional wall light.
  • The floor is stone tile.
PATIO (ACCESSIBLE APARTMENT)
  • The patio is accessed either through the patio doors from the sitting room, or from the garage.  There is a slight slope across the middle of the patio.
  • It is furnished with a wooden table and four chairs and a sun umbrella.
  • Its measurements are 306cm/120.5ins by 160cm/63ins and the entrance from the garage is 214cm/84ins wide.
  • The floor is level through the garage to the patio.

Grounds

Garden

  • There is a gently sloping path from the garage leading up to the swimming pool and sun terrace area of the main house.
  • The sun terrace is also accessed from the parking area via a gateway which is 86cm/34ins wide.  The surface is stone tiles and is level.
  • The sun terrace leads via a gently sloping ramp to the covered verandah outside the kitchen and dining room areas of the main house.
  • The path, sun terrace and pool area are paved with non-slip stone tiles.
  • There is a gas BBQ on the sun terrace.
  • The verandah is level and paved with stone tiles.Caution – these stone tiles become slippery when wet. Exercise appropriate care especially young children and / or those with mobility issues
  • There is a wooden table and eight chairs on the verandah, and a seating area with a sofa and two easy chairs plus two more easy chairs at the other end of the verandah.
  • The garden is lit by led lights.  The verandah is lit by electric wall lights.

Swimming Pool

  • The pool is 10×5 metres and is a salt water pool.
  • The shallow end is 0.9 metres deep and is 2.0 metres long, the floor of the pool then slopes gently for 6.75 metres until it reaches a depth of 1.65 metres and continues level for a further 1.25 metres at the deep end.
  • There are 3 steps forming an arc with a central handrail leading into the pool at the shallow end and a set of ladder steps at the deep end.
  • A manual hoist is provided which works with a swivel and a sling to provide access to the pool for those who cannot manage the steps.
  • You should ensure adequate supervised of all pool users at all times

Additional Information

  • We welcome assistance dogs by prior arrangement.  Owners must provide dogs’ beds.  Dogs must be kept under control at all times.  Owners must clean up after their animals in the garden.
  • Internet access with WiFi is provided throughout the house and apartment.
  • Mobile phone coverage is good.
  • There are general (government) hospitals in Larnaca (34 km/21 miles) and Limassol (43 km/26 miles)
  • Our recommended doctor is Dr Femke Ellens, 34 Amathountos Avenue, at 35km/21 miles.
  • We can put you in contact with a number of specialist care agencies should you wish to discuss pre-booking domiciliary or other care.
